President Clifford introduced Michela Salter and Margot Saari from the Sioux Lookout Refugee Sponsorship Group who spoke on the work of a local group of dedicated citizens who are actively working to sponsor a refugee family to Sioux Lookout.

Initially motivated by media coverage of the plight of Syrian asylum seekers, Michela approached a local priest to see what could be done locally to assist.  Quickly, a committee was formed who has been working the last several months to secure sponsorship for a family.  Presently, the sponsorship group is tagged with a family of six from Eritrea, a small African nation on the Red Sea in the Horn of Africa.  Michela spoke about the background work required to sponsor a refugee, while Margot spoke about the efforts of several subcommittees who are tasked with handling finer details related to the needs of the family upon arrival in Sioux Lookout.  The program was driven by compassion and a sense of needed action, and generated many great questions from Rotarians.  For more information on the Sioux Lookout Refugee Sponsorship group, visit www.siouxlookoutsponsors.wordpress.com or joining them on Facebook at Sioux Lookout Refugee Sponsorship Group.

Rotarian Lorenzo thanked both ladies for their presentation.
